MapleStory Classic Beginner's First Steps

Summary

A first-hours route from Maple Island to the level 10 job choice, including beginner quests, safe AP allocation, early travel, and survival priorities.

Article body

You start on Maple Island

Your goals on Maple Island:

  • Talk to every NPC. Most hand out a one-quest, small-EXP-and-an-item reward.
  • Grab the Green Relaxer chair. It's the reward from Pio's quest below, and this is the only place you can get it.
  • By the time you finish all the beginner quests on Maple Island, you'll likely be lv 8. That's when you take the boat from Shanks at the dock to Lith Harbor and continue questing there.

All 10 Maple Island quests (chains counted once, EXP summed across steps), straight from the quest tracker:

Future mages and bowmen: this isn't pre-Big Bang. A 30-INT Beginner kills snails about as fast as a 30-STR one. Pump your future job's primary stat from level 1 (see AP allocation below); the early grind no longer punishes you for it.

Max your Beginner skills by level 10

You earn 9 SP by the time you hit level 10 (1 per level-up, 9 level-ups from 1 to 10). That's exactly enough to max all three Beginner skills (3 SP each, 9 total).

SkillMaxWhat it does at max
 - MapleStory ClassicNimble Feet3Speed +10 for 30s (MP -10). 3 min cooldown.
 - MapleStory ClassicThree Snails340 fixed damage, ranged. Consumes 1 Red Snail Shell + 5 MP per cast.
 - MapleStory ClassicRecovery3Heals 72 HP over 30s (MP -15). 2 min cooldown.
  • Nimble Feet: short speed boost. You'll burn it constantly: chasing mobs, running between maps, closing gaps.
  • Three Snails: ranged damage; consumes Red Snail Shells. Your only real DPS skill before advancement.
  • Recovery: passive HP regen over 30 seconds. Saves you a few potions a day.

Order matters for levels 1 to 9; by 10 they're all maxed anyway. Take Nimble Feet first, then Three Snails for ranged, Recovery last.

First job advancement at level 10

Stick to the Lith Harbor beginner quests until you hit level 10, then head to one of four towns:

  • Perion: Warriors (Dances With Balrog)
  • Ellinia: Magicians (Grendel the Really Old)
  • Henesys: Bowmen (Athena Pierce)
  • Kerning City: Thieves (Dark Lord)
Don't spend AP on the wrong stat thinking advancement will fix it. 1st job has no stat requirements (a 4-INT Beginner can advance to Warrior), but your AP does not reset on advancement. Every misallocated point follows you into your job. The only way to undo it is a cash-shop AP Reset.

Ability Points allocation

You get 5 AP per level for STR, DEX, INT, and LUK. Safe split for new players: 4 in your primary, 1 in your secondary, until your secondary hits the weapon-req minimum. After that, dump everything into primary.

  • Warrior: 4 STR / 1 DEX
  • Magician: 4 INT / 1 LUK
  • Bowman: 4 DEX / 1 STR
  • Thief: 4 LUK / 1 DEX

From level 10 to 30: follow your class guide

Lv 10 to 30 is the long middle. The right path depends on the class you picked, so the rest is in the per-class guides:

Lv 30 is 2nd job. Same town, same instructor, and you pick a branch:
Warrior: Fighter, Page, Spearman
Magician: Cleric, Ice/Lightning, Fire/Poison
Bowman: Hunter, Crossbowman
Thief: Assassin, Bandit

The class tier list breaks down each branch.

A few survival tips

  • Party up. Classic gives bonus EXP for party kills, and most early quests are faster with two or three people.
  • Don't sell quest items. The quest tracker lists which inventory items are needed for active quests so you can check before clearing junk.
  • Potions are scarce. Mobs drop them rarely, so expect to spend most of your mesos at NPCs.
  • Buy smart at NPC shops. The item efficiency tool ranks HP and MP potions by meso-per-point.

Walk the same routes enough times and you'll start recognizing the other players doing the same. That's how parties form.
