MapleStory Classic WorldGLBMapleStory Classic Bowman Leveling Guide

Summary
A level 10-30 Bowman route covering DEX and STR allocation, Double Shot, bow and crossbow equipment tables, scrolling priorities, and Hunter or Crossbowman preparation.
Article body
Bowman is the flexible pick in MapleStory Classic: Hunter and Crossbowman share the whole 1st-job tree (only the weapon differs), so nothing before 30 locks you in. 4 DEX / 1 STR per level, Double Shot as the main attack. Below: the SP order, bow and crossbow tables, and how far you can push DEX.

The Bowman at a glance
Advance at lv 10 via Athena Pierce in Henesys. Both 2nd-job paths share the 1st-job tree (only the weapon differs) and are DEX-primary / STR-secondary, so your AP and SP carry cleanly to 2nd job.
• Hunter → bow user, faster swings, Arrow Bomb small-AoE stun.
• Crossbowman → crossbow user, slower swings but bigger per-hit, Iron Arrow piercing line.
AP allocation: how DEX-heavy can you go?
MAX = (1 + (DEX × 2.5 + STR + AttackPower) / 100) × WATK × SkillPercent
• WATK is the outer multiplier on the whole formula; +1 WATK on a weapon scroll beats almost any armor stat upgrade.
• DEX runs through the 2.5x weapon multiplier (same for bows and crossbows), the second-best DPS stat per point.
• STR adds 1:1 into the inner slot alongside flat AttackPower. Real damage but roughly 1/10 of a WATK point. Scrolling STR for damage is a bad trade.
• Put just enough STR into gear to meet reqs; everything else goes into DEX; weapon scroll slots target WATK first. Note most bowman weapons carry a STR requirement from lv 15 (Composite Bow needs STR 15), though the Battle Crossbow stays STR-free; bowman chests carry no STR until the lv 20 Shivermail (STR 10).
Standard build (recommended): 4 DEX / 1 STR per level
- By lv 30: roughly DEX 105 / STR 24 with pre-10 beginner investment.
- Lv 30 armor (Hawkeye hat, Huntress chest) needs STR 20 / DEX 50, cleared exactly.
- Lv 30 Eagle Crow crossbow needs STR 20 / DEX 65, trivial.
- Lv 30 Ryden bow needs STR 30 / DEX 65. Bowmen are 6 STR short; fill with a +3 STR armor variant (Brown Hawkeye, Black Huntress, Brown Marker).
DEX-tilted (5 DEX per level)
All STR from gear and scrolls. The bow path locks out quickly (Composite Bow at lv 15 needs STR 15), so DEX-tilted is really a crossbow-only path:
- Lv 10-14 → Fully DEX-tilted. War Bow and Crossbow have no STR req; base armor is 0 STR.
- Lv 15-19 → Bows are out (Composite Bow needs STR 15). Crossbows stay free: Battle Crossbow needs DEX 35, zero STR.
- Lv 20-29 → Crossbowmen can stay 0 base STR with Balanche (STR 10) and Mountain Crossbow (STR 15) if they stack +STR gear.
- Lv 30+ → Eagle Crow needs STR 20 base or +20 from gear. At this point DEX-tilted is effectively the standard build.
Skill build: the SP math
Lv 10-30 gives 61 SP; maxing everything costs 105, so you have to skip something. Per-level effects live on the Bowman class page.
| Skill | Max | What it does at max | Prereq | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Critical Shot | 15 | Passive +20% Crit Rate, +15% Crit Damage | None | |
| Amazon's Judgement | 15 | Crits proc 100% chance to slow enemy by 35 for 3s | Critical Shot lv 3 | |
| The Eye of Amazon | 15 | Passive +150 attack range for bows and crossbows | None | |
| Focus | 20 | Buff: +20 Acc, +25 Avoid for 300s (MP -16) | Eye of Amazon lv 3 | |
| Arrow Blow | 20 | 240% damage single hit | None | |
| Double Shot | 20 | 120% damage x 2 hits (240% total) | Arrow Blow lv 1 |
• Double Shot 20 (main attack, 2 independent crit rolls per cast)
• Eye of Amazon 15 (+150 attack range)
• Arrow Blow 1 (Double Shot prereq)
The remaining 25 SP defaults to Critical Shot 15 + Focus 10 (Standard Ranger) for passive damage + avoidability. Two niche alternatives below.
| Lvl | SP gained | Spend on |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | 1 (advancement) | Arrow Blow +1 (AB 1, Double Shot unlocked) |
| 11 | 3 | Double Shot +3 (DS 3, online) |
| 12 | 3 | Double Shot +3 (DS 6) |
| 13 | 3 | Double Shot +3 (DS 9) |
| 14 | 3 | Double Shot +3 (DS 12) |
| 15 | 3 | Double Shot +3 (DS 15) |
| 16 | 3 | Double Shot +3 (DS 18) |
| 17 | 3 | Double Shot +2 (DS 20 MAX), Eye of Amazon +1 (EoA 1) |
| 18 | 3 | Eye of Amazon +3 (EoA 4, Focus unlocked) |
| 19 | 3 | Eye of Amazon +3 (EoA 7) |
| 20 | 3 | Eye of Amazon +3 (EoA 10) |
| 21 | 3 | Eye of Amazon +3 (EoA 13) |
| 22 | 3 | Eye of Amazon +2 (EoA 15 MAX), Critical Shot +1 (CS 1) |
| 23 | 3 | Critical Shot +3 (CS 4) |
| 24 | 3 | Critical Shot +3 (CS 7) |
| 25 | 3 | Critical Shot +3 (CS 10) |
| 26 | 3 | Critical Shot +3 (CS 13) |
| 27 | 3 | Critical Shot +2 (CS 15 MAX), Focus +1 (F 1) |
| 28 | 3 | Focus +3 (F 4) |
| 29 | 3 | Focus +3 (F 7) |
| 30 | 3 | Focus +3 (F 10) |
• Survivor → swap to Focus 20 + Critical Shot 5. Full +20 ACC / +25 avoid at max Focus, less passive crit. Good for melee-dense maps.
• Kiter → swap to Critical Shot 15 + Amazon's Judgement 10, skip Focus. Max CS (+20% crit rate) on a 2-hit Double Shot procs the slow constantly. Don't pick this on melee-dense maps; you have no avoidability buff.
Weapons: bow or crossbow, and when to upgrade
Bows and crossbows share the 2.5x weapon multiplier. The choice is faster swings (bows) vs bigger per-hit numbers (crossbows). Both are 2-handed, so bowmen never get a shield slot.
Bows (Hunter path)
| Lvl | Weapon | WATK | Speed | STR req | DEX req | Bonus | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | War Bow | 30 | 6 (Normal) | 0 | 25 | None | |
| 10 | Beginner's War Bow | 29 | 6 (Normal) | 0 | 25 | untradeable | |
| 15 | Composite Bow | 35 | 6 (Normal) | 15 | 35 | None | |
| 20 | Hunter's Bow | 42 | 6 (Normal) | 20 | 45 | None | |
| 25 | Battle Bow | 44 | 5 (Fast) | 25 | 55 | only Fast bow in range | |
| 30 | Ryden | 50 | 6 (Normal) | 30 | 65 | +1 STR |
Crossbows (Crossbowman path)
| Lvl | Weapon | WATK | Speed | STR req | DEX req | Bonus | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | Crossbow | 32 | 7 (Slow) | 0 | 25 | None | |
| 15 | Battle Crossbow | 37 | 7 (Slow) | 0 | 35 | zero STR req | |
| 20 | Balanche | 39 | 6 (Normal) | 10 | 45 | only Normal crossbow in range | |
| 25 | Mountain Crossbow | 47 | 7 (Slow) | 15 | 55 | None | |
| 30 | Eagle Crow | 52 | 7 (Slow) | 20 | 65 | +1 DEX |
Arrows
Arrows are consumed per attack. No level req on any tier, so the only factor is cost. Arrow WATK stacks directly onto weapon WATK, so the top tier is a free +3 WATK. Use whatever you can afford to burn.
| Arrow (Bow) | WATK | Arrow (Crossbow) | WATK | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Arrow for Bow | +0 | Arrow for Crossbow | +0 | |
| Bronze Arrow for Bow | +1 | Bronze Arrow for Crossbow | +1 | |
| Iron Arrow for Bow | +2 | Iron Arrow for Crossbow | +2 | |
| Adamantium Arrow for Bow | +3 | Mithril Arrow for Crossbow | +3 |
Armor: meet the requirements, scroll the rest
• Most tiers ship in STR and DEX colour variants (Brown = STR, Green = DEX). HP/MP variants exist but don't help damage.
• No shield slot (bows and crossbows are 2-handed).
• No native overall until Kismet / Lumati at lv 50; the lv 30 Sauna Robe fills the gap.
Hats
STR and DEX colour variants at every tier. Common-class hats (Bandana, Metal Gear, Bamboo Hat, Starry Bandana) fill gaps.
| Lvl | Item | STR | DEX | Stat req | WDEF | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | Winter Hat (Bowman) | Brown +1 | Green +1 | DEX 10 | 9 | |
| 10 | Yellow Bandana (any) | +1 | - | None | 9 | |
| 15 | Feather Hat (Bowman) | Brown +1 | Green +1 | DEX 20 | 12 | |
| 15 | Metal Gear (any) | +1 | - | None | 12 | |
| 15 | Yellow Metal Gear (any) | - | +1 | None | 13 | |
| 20 | Robin Hat (Bowman) | Brown +2 | Green +2 | STR 10, DEX 30 | 15 | |
| 25 | Hunter Hat (Bowman) | Brown +2 | Green +2 | STR 15, DEX 40 | 18 | |
| 25 | Red Starry Bandana (any) | +2 | - | STR 10 | 18 | |
| 25 | Green Bamboo Hat (any) | - | +2 | STR 10 | 18 | |
| 30 | Hawkeye (Bowman) | Brown +3 | Green +3 | STR 20, DEX 50 | 21 |
Tops
Brown / Green = STR / DEX. Lv 20 has split male/female lines (Hard Leather / Shivermail) with identical stats.
| Lvl | Tier | STR | DEX | Stat req | WDEF | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | Archer Top | Brown +1 | Green +1 | DEX 10 | 14 | |
| 15 | Leather Hoodwear / Able Armor | Silver +1 | Green +1 | DEX 20 | 18 | |
| 20 | Hard Leather / Shivermail | Red Shivermail +2 | Brown Hard Leather +2 | STR 10, DEX 30 | 22 | |
| 25 | Bennis Chainmail | Black +2 / Yellow +2 | Green +2 | STR 15, DEX 40 | 26 | |
| 30 | Huntress Armor | Black +3 | Green +3 | STR 20, DEX 50 | 30 |
Bottoms
Brown / Green = STR / DEX. One dead spot: lv 25 Bennis Chainpants only has a +2 DEX variant, no STR alternative. STR-leaning bowmen either hold lv 20 Shivermail Skirt for a tier or take the DEX variant and make up STR elsewhere.
| Lvl | Tier | STR | DEX | Stat req | WDEF | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | Archer Pants / Avelin Skirt | Yellow Avelin +1 | Archer Pants +1 | DEX 10 | 10 | |
| 15 | Able Skirt | Brown +1 | Green +1 | DEX 20 | 13 | |
| 20 | Hard Leather / Shivermail | Red Shivermail Skirt +2 | Green Shivermail Skirt +2 | STR 10, DEX 30 | 16 | |
| 25 | Bennis Chainpants | (no STR variant) | Bennis Chainpants +2 | STR 15, DEX 40 | 19 | |
| 30 | Huntress Pants | Black +3 | Green +3 | STR 20, DEX 50 | 22 |
Overalls (Sauna Robe)
Bowmen get exactly one Overall option in this range: the Sauna Robe. The Kismet / Lumati bowman overalls don't unlock until lv 50.
| Lvl | Item | WDEF | DEX req | STR req | Bonus | Slots | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30 | Blue Sauna Robe | 57 | 0 | 0 | +1 STR/DEX/INT/LUK | 10 | |
| 30 | Red Sauna Robe | 57 | 0 | 0 | +1 STR/DEX/INT/LUK | 10 |
Both Sauna Robes are lv 30, no class/stat req, 10 slots, from the Returned Secret Book quest (final step of Mr. Wetbottom's chain in Sleepywood). 10 Lesser Overall DEX scrolls = +10 DEX from one piece, bridging the 20-level gap to Kismet / Lumati at lv 50.
Shoes
Bowman shoes give Avoidability + Speed/Jump on top of WDEF. Most tiers are STR-tilted (the class assumes secondary STR); the only +DEX no-req shoe is Green Snowshoes at lv 30. Plus the any-class Squishy Shoes (lv 28, +1 all stats).
| Lvl | Variant | Bonus | STR req | DEX req | WDEF | Avoid | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | Brown Hard Leather Boots (Bowman) | speed +1 | 0 | 10 | 6 | +1 | |
| 10 | Green Hard Leather Boots (Bowman) | jump +1 | 0 | 10 | 6 | +1 | |
| 15 | Brown Woodsman Boots (Bowman) | +1 STR, +5 HP | 0 | 20 | 8 | +1 | |
| 20 | Bear Huntertop (Bowman) | +2 STR | 10 | 30 | 10 | +2 | |
| 20 | Deer Huntertop (Bowman) | +1 STR, +1 DEX (hybrid) | 10 | 30 | 10 | +2 | |
| 25 | Brown Jack Boots (Bowman) | +1 STR, +5 HP, speed +1 | 15 | 40 | 12 | +2 | |
| 25 | Green Jack Boots (Bowman) | +2 STR, +5 MP | 15 | 40 | 12 | +2 | |
| 25 | Red Jack Boots (Bowman) | +1 STR, +5 HP, jump +1 | 15 | 40 | 12 | +2 | |
| 28 | Squishy Shoes (any) | +1 STR, +1 DEX, +1 INT, +1 LUK | 0 | 0 | 7 | 0 | |
| 30 | Red Hunter Boots (Bowman) | +3 STR | 20 | 50 | 14 | +3 | |
| 30 | Black Hunter Boots (Bowman) | +2 STR, +1 DEX (hybrid) | 20 | 50 | 14 | +3 | |
| 30 | Green Snowshoes (Bowman) | +1 DEX | 0 | 0 | 14 | +3 |
Gloves
Start at lv 15. Basic Archer Gloves only has a +1 DEX variant, so STR-leaning bowmen wear no-stat Work Gloves until lv 20. From 20+ every tier has STR, DEX, and hybrid colour variants.
Capes
Only one cape worth wearing in this range: Old Raggedy Cape at lv 25, no req, 10 WDEF.
| Lvl | Cape | WDEF | Stat req | Job | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 25 | Old Raggedy Cape | 10 | None | Common |
Earrings
Shared across all classes. 5 scroll slots, no WDEF, small MP/avoid bonuses. Scroll Earring DEX into them.
| Lvl | Earring | Bonus | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 | Single Earring | (scroll target) | |
| 20 | Weighted Earrings | +1 avoid | |
| 25 | Leaf Earrings | +5 MP, +2 avoid | |
| 30 | Lightning Earrings | +2 avoid |
Scrolling: cheap and safe until level 50
• Most bowman armor has 7 slots; the Sauna Robe has 10.
• Only Chaos scrolls destroy on fail. Lesser, Intermediate, Greater are all safe.
• Don't perfect-scroll lv 10-30 gear; you'll want to replace most things by lv 35.
| Grade | Success | Bonus | Destroys? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lesser | 100% | +1 stat | No |
| Intermediate | 60% | +2 stat | No |
| Greater | 10% | +3 stat | No |
| Chaos | 10% | +5 stat | Yes (on fail) |
Hammer Lesser (100%) Overall DEX into your Sauna Robe; try Intermediate (60%) Attack on weapon slots 1-2.
• Tulcus (Warning Street: The Swamp of Despair II) sells Overall Armor DEX Scroll: Lesser at 15,000 mesos (for the Sauna Robe). Also stocks Hat Accuracy, Shoes Avoidability, and Cape WDEF/MDEF/Accuracy scrolls.
• El Moth (Victoria Road: The Tree That Grew III) sells Bow Attack Scroll: Lesser and Crossbow Attack Scroll: Lesser at 20,000 mesos each.
Where to grind from 10 to 30
For per-bracket map picks (Lv 10-15 through Lv 25-30), open the Best Grind Maps guide and filter to the lv 10-30 brackets. Bowman's natural advantage is range, and Eye of Amazon stretches it further. Pick platformed maps, kite mobs into chokepoints, and never stand toe-to-toe with anything you can shoot from across the screen.
Level 30: pick your second job
Return to Athena Pierce in Henesys for a short quest, then choose:
- Hunter → bow. Bow Mastery stabilizes damage + adds +20 Avoidability at max (Crossbowman doesn't get this). Bow Booster (-2 speed stages, 300s). Final Attack: Bow procs a ~100% follow-up hitting up to 3 enemies. Power Knock-Back pushes 4 mobs back at 200% damage and always crits. Soul Arrow: Bow kills arrow consumption for 5 min. Arrow Bomb deals 140% to the primary target and stuns up to 4 adjacent enemies (the explosion only stuns). Faster, more mobile.
- Crossbowman → crossbow. Crossbow Mastery adds mastery scaling + 20% chance to ignore Weapon Defense at max (pure damage perk). Crossbow Booster (-2 speed stages, 300s). Final Attack: Crossbow procs a ~270% single-target follow-up (bigger than Hunter's but no AoE). Power Knock-Back mirrors Hunter's. Soul Arrow: Crossbow same 5-min arrow skip. Iron Arrow pierces up to 4 mobs at 190%/152%/114%/76% in a line (true horizontal AoE Hunter doesn't have). Bigger per-shot, piercing AoE.
