MapleStory Classic Bowman Leveling Guide

Summary

A level 10-30 Bowman route covering DEX and STR allocation, Double Shot, bow and crossbow equipment tables, scrolling priorities, and Hunter or Crossbowman preparation.

Article body

Bowman is the flexible pick in MapleStory Classic: Hunter and Crossbowman share the whole 1st-job tree (only the weapon differs), so nothing before 30 locks you in. 4 DEX / 1 STR per level, Double Shot as the main attack. Below: the SP order, bow and crossbow tables, and how far you can push DEX.

Contents

  1. The Bowman at a glance
  2. AP allocation: how DEX-heavy can you go?
  3. Skill build: the SP math
  4. Weapons: bow or crossbow, and when to upgrade
  5. Armor: meet the requirements, scroll the rest
  6. Scrolling: cheap and safe until level 50
  7. Where to grind from 10 to 30
  8. Level 30: pick your second job

The Bowman at a glance

Advance at lv 10 via Athena Pierce in Henesys. Both 2nd-job paths share the 1st-job tree (only the weapon differs) and are DEX-primary / STR-secondary, so your AP and SP carry cleanly to 2nd job.

Two 2nd-job branches (both DEX-primary):
Hunter → bow user, faster swings, Arrow Bomb small-AoE stun.
Crossbowman → crossbow user, slower swings but bigger per-hit, Iron Arrow piercing line.

AP allocation: how DEX-heavy can you go?

How DEX and STR factor into bowman damage:

MAX = (1 + (DEX × 2.5 + STR + AttackPower) / 100) × WATK × SkillPercent

WATK is the outer multiplier on the whole formula; +1 WATK on a weapon scroll beats almost any armor stat upgrade.
DEX runs through the 2.5x weapon multiplier (same for bows and crossbows), the second-best DPS stat per point.
STR adds 1:1 into the inner slot alongside flat AttackPower. Real damage but roughly 1/10 of a WATK point. Scrolling STR for damage is a bad trade.
• Put just enough STR into gear to meet reqs; everything else goes into DEX; weapon scroll slots target WATK first. Note most bowman weapons carry a STR requirement from lv 15 (Composite Bow needs STR 15), though the Battle Crossbow stays STR-free; bowman chests carry no STR until the lv 20 Shivermail (STR 10).
  • By lv 30: roughly DEX 105 / STR 24 with pre-10 beginner investment.
  • Lv 30 armor (Hawkeye hat, Huntress chest) needs STR 20 / DEX 50, cleared exactly.
  • Lv 30 Eagle Crow crossbow needs STR 20 / DEX 65, trivial.
  • Lv 30 Ryden bow needs STR 30 / DEX 65. Bowmen are 6 STR short; fill with a +3 STR armor variant (Brown Hawkeye, Black Huntress, Brown Marker).

DEX-tilted (5 DEX per level)

All STR from gear and scrolls. The bow path locks out quickly (Composite Bow at lv 15 needs STR 15), so DEX-tilted is really a crossbow-only path:

  • Lv 10-14 → Fully DEX-tilted. War Bow and Crossbow have no STR req; base armor is 0 STR.
  • Lv 15-19 → Bows are out (Composite Bow needs STR 15). Crossbows stay free: Battle Crossbow needs DEX 35, zero STR.
  • Lv 20-29 → Crossbowmen can stay 0 base STR with Balanche (STR 10) and Mountain Crossbow (STR 15) if they stack +STR gear.
  • Lv 30+ → Eagle Crow needs STR 20 base or +20 from gear. At this point DEX-tilted is effectively the standard build.
AP Reset potions are cash-shop in Classic World. If you're new, start with 4 DEX / 1 STR and reset later if you want to try DEX-tilted crossbowman.

Skill build: the SP math

Lv 10-30 gives 61 SP; maxing everything costs 105, so you have to skip something. Per-level effects live on the Bowman class page.

 - MapleStory ClassicDouble Shot20120% damage x 2 hits (240% total)Arrow Blow lv 1
Double Shot beats Arrow Blow for leveling. Both peak at 240% per cast, but Double Shot gets: multi-target potential (mobCount 2, splits across two mobs or stacks on one), two independent Amazon's Judgement slow-proc rolls, and lower damage variance. Possible Crit Damage stacking (unverified in Classic World) could double the crit ceiling. Take Arrow Blow at 1 SP as the prereq tax and don't touch it again.
Every bowman locks 36 SP:
Double Shot 20 (main attack, 2 independent crit rolls per cast)
Eye of Amazon 15 (+150 attack range)
Arrow Blow 1 (Double Shot prereq)

The remaining 25 SP defaults to Critical Shot 15 + Focus 10 (Standard Ranger) for passive damage + avoidability. Two niche alternatives below.

Niche alternatives to Standard Ranger:
Survivor → swap to Focus 20 + Critical Shot 5. Full +20 ACC / +25 avoid at max Focus, less passive crit. Good for melee-dense maps.
Kiter → swap to Critical Shot 15 + Amazon's Judgement 10, skip Focus. Max CS (+20% crit rate) on a 2-hit Double Shot procs the slow constantly. Don't pick this on melee-dense maps; you have no avoidability buff.

Weapons: bow or crossbow, and when to upgrade

Bows and crossbows share the 2.5x weapon multiplier. The choice is faster swings (bows) vs bigger per-hit numbers (crossbows). Both are 2-handed, so bowmen never get a shield slot.

 - MapleStory Classic25Mountain Crossbow477 (Slow)1555None
 - MapleStory Classic30Eagle Crow527 (Slow)2065+1 DEX
Crossbows usually hit 2-3 WATK harder per tier and swing slower (Slow 7 vs Normal 6), except the lv 20 Balanche, which drops WATK to gain Normal swing speed. They're also the DEX-tilted-friendly path: Battle Crossbow needs zero STR, Balanche STR 10, Mountain Crossbow STR 15, Eagle Crow STR 20. Bowmen have to start budgeting STR from lv 15 (Composite Bow STR 15).

Arrows

Arrows are consumed per attack. No level req on any tier, so the only factor is cost. Arrow WATK stacks directly onto weapon WATK, so the top tier is a free +3 WATK. Use whatever you can afford to burn.

Armor: meet the requirements, scroll the rest

Bowman armor rules:
• Most tiers ship in STR and DEX colour variants (Brown = STR, Green = DEX). HP/MP variants exist but don't help damage.
• No shield slot (bows and crossbows are 2-handed).
• No native overall until Kismet / Lumati at lv 50; the lv 30 Sauna Robe fills the gap.

Hats

STR and DEX colour variants at every tier. Common-class hats (Bandana, Metal Gear, Bamboo Hat, Starry Bandana) fill gaps.

The bowman hat line is the cleanest in the game. Every tier has both Brown (+STR) and Green (+DEX) variants at identical WDEF and reqs, so pick whichever stat you're shorter on.

Tops

Brown / Green = STR / DEX. Lv 20 has split male/female lines (Hard Leather / Shivermail) with identical stats.

Bottoms

Brown / Green = STR / DEX. One dead spot: lv 25 Bennis Chainpants only has a +2 DEX variant, no STR alternative. STR-leaning bowmen either hold lv 20 Shivermail Skirt for a tier or take the DEX variant and make up STR elsewhere.

Overalls (Sauna Robe)

Bowmen get exactly one Overall option in this range: the Sauna Robe. The Kismet / Lumati bowman overalls don't unlock until lv 50.

 - MapleStory Classic30Blue Sauna Robe5700+1 STR/DEX/INT/LUK10

Both Sauna Robes are lv 30, no class/stat req, 10 slots, from the Returned Secret Book quest (final step of Mr. Wetbottom's chain in Sleepywood). 10 Lesser Overall DEX scrolls = +10 DEX from one piece, bridging the 20-level gap to Kismet / Lumati at lv 50.

Shoes

Bowman shoes give Avoidability + Speed/Jump on top of WDEF. Most tiers are STR-tilted (the class assumes secondary STR); the only +DEX no-req shoe is Green Snowshoes at lv 30. Plus the any-class Squishy Shoes (lv 28, +1 all stats).

DEX-leaning bowmen should grab Squishy Shoes at lv 28 and Green Snowshoes at lv 30 despite the WDEF hit. +1 DEX + +1 all stats is the best no-scroll stat package you can wear.

Gloves

Start at lv 15. Basic Archer Gloves only has a +1 DEX variant, so STR-leaning bowmen wear no-stat Work Gloves until lv 20. From 20+ every tier has STR, DEX, and hybrid colour variants.

Scrolling: cheap and safe until level 50

Scroll rules:
• Most bowman armor has 7 slots; the Sauna Robe has 10.
• Only Chaos scrolls destroy on fail. Lesser, Intermediate, Greater are all safe.
• Don't perfect-scroll lv 10-30 gear; you'll want to replace most things by lv 35.

Intermediate60%+2 statNo
Greater10%+3 statNo
Chaos10%+5 statYes (on fail)

Hammer Lesser (100%) Overall DEX into your Sauna Robe; try Intermediate (60%) Attack on weapon slots 1-2.

Where to buy them. Two Classic-only vendors stock the key Lesser scrolls for bowmen:
Tulcus (Warning Street: The Swamp of Despair II) sells Overall Armor DEX Scroll: Lesser at 15,000 mesos (for the Sauna Robe). Also stocks Hat Accuracy, Shoes Avoidability, and Cape WDEF/MDEF/Accuracy scrolls.
El Moth (Victoria Road: The Tree That Grew III) sells Bow Attack Scroll: Lesser and Crossbow Attack Scroll: Lesser at 20,000 mesos each.

Where to grind from 10 to 30

For per-bracket map picks (Lv 10-15 through Lv 25-30), open the Best Grind Maps guide and filter to the lv 10-30 brackets. Bowman's natural advantage is range, and Eye of Amazon stretches it further. Pick platformed maps, kite mobs into chokepoints, and never stand toe-to-toe with anything you can shoot from across the screen.

Want picks tailored to your exact build? Open the Character Builder, enter your level, stats, and gear, and the Training Advisor panel ranks every map by EXP efficiency specifically for you instead of the generic bands above.

Level 30: pick your second job

Return to Athena Pierce in Henesys for a short quest, then choose:

  • Hunter → bow. Bow Mastery stabilizes damage + adds +20 Avoidability at max (Crossbowman doesn't get this). Bow Booster (-2 speed stages, 300s). Final Attack: Bow procs a ~100% follow-up hitting up to 3 enemies. Power Knock-Back pushes 4 mobs back at 200% damage and always crits. Soul Arrow: Bow kills arrow consumption for 5 min. Arrow Bomb deals 140% to the primary target and stuns up to 4 adjacent enemies (the explosion only stuns). Faster, more mobile.
  • Crossbowman → crossbow. Crossbow Mastery adds mastery scaling + 20% chance to ignore Weapon Defense at max (pure damage perk). Crossbow Booster (-2 speed stages, 300s). Final Attack: Crossbow procs a ~270% single-target follow-up (bigger than Hunter's but no AoE). Power Knock-Back mirrors Hunter's. Soul Arrow: Crossbow same 5-min arrow skip. Iron Arrow pierces up to 4 mobs at 190%/152%/114%/76% in a line (true horizontal AoE Hunter doesn't have). Bigger per-shot, piercing AoE.
