MapleStory Classic Magician Leveling Guide

Summary

A level 10-30 Magician route covering INT and LUK allocation, Magic Claw progression, mage damage scaling, wand and staff choices, armor, and branch preparation.

Article body

Magicians get the easy start in MapleStory Classic: all three branches share the same 1st-job build, so nothing you pick before 30 can go wrong. 4 INT / 1 LUK per level, max Magic Claw first. Below: the SP order, wand and armor tables, and why LUK does nothing for your damage.

  9. Level 30: pick your second job

The Magician at a glance

Advance at lv 10 via Grendel the Really Old in Ellinia. All three mage branches share the 1st-job tree, so your AP and SP carry cleanly to 2nd job.

Three 2nd-job branches (all INT primary / LUK secondary):
F/P Wizard → Fire Arrow burst + Poison Breath small-AoE DoT
I/L Wizard → Cold Beam freeze + Thunder Bolt AoE
Cleric → Heal (hits up to 6 undead), Bless, Holy Arrow, Invincible

AP allocation: pure INT or low-LUK?

INT is your damage stat. LUK does nothing for spell damage (no LUK-scaling skill). It exists to meet gear requirements and gives a bit of accuracy.

  • By lv 30 you're able to equip the Mithril Wand (INT 60 / LUK 20) and Wizard Robe (INT 50 / LUK 20) exactly on schedule.
  • No gear gymnastics, no AP resets.

Lukless (5 INT per level)

All LUK comes from scrolls and gear. Every wand, staff, and robe past lv 20 has a LUK req, so lukless is really only viable lv 10-19:

  • Lv 10-19 → Fully lukless-friendly. Wooden Wand (INT 20) and Hardwood Wand (INT 30) have no LUK req.
  • Lv 20+Metal Wand needs LUK 10, Ice Wand LUK 15, lv 30 gear LUK 20. Past this, "lukless" just means "low-LUK with the rest from gear."
AP Reset potions are cash-shop in Classic World, so the cost of guessing wrong is low. If you're new, start with 4 INT / 1 LUK.

Skill build: the SP math

Lv 10-30 gives 61 SP; maxing everything costs 105, so you have to skip something. Per-level effects live on the Magician class page.

 - MapleStory ClassicMagic Claw20Two-hit attack at 30 eachEnergy Bolt lv 1
Magic Claw is strictly stronger than Energy Bolt under the confirmed magic formula. Max Magic Claw is 2 hits × 30, max Energy Bolt is 1 × 65. Both share the same outer multiplier, so Magic Claw wins per cast once total Magic > 35 (i.e. every mage from ≈lv 15 onward). On top of that it gives two independent crit rolls per cast. Both skills pass through terrain in the latest COT (Energy Bolt was previously blocked by walls; Nexon changed this). Energy Bolt costs less MP (14 vs 20) and has a higher single-hit damage that could sometimes help with knockback, but the total damage gap makes Magic Claw the clean default.
Every mage maxes the same core:
Magic Claw 20 (main attack)
Magic Guard 15 (80% HP damage goes to MP, so you're near-immortal while MP is up)
Max MP Increase 15 (passive +25% MaxMP)

That's 50 SP + 1 SP prereq (Energy Bolt 1) + 3 SP prereq (Improved MP Recovery 3) = 54 SP locked in. The remaining 7 SP is flex.

Max MP Increase was reworked in MS Classic. In Pre-BB MapleStory, most mages rushed Max MP Increase early because each level scaled your MaxMP growth on every future level-up, so putting points in late meant losing out on permanent MP. Classic flattens it to a simple passive +25% MaxMP at max, applied instantly. There's no longer any penalty for deferring it, which is why the build above holds it until after Magic Claw and Magic Guard are locked in.
Flex 7 SP → either early Magic Armor (+WDEF/MDEF buff, stacks with Magic Guard) or more Improved MP Recovery if you're heading to Cleric. It doesn't matter much; you'll reset at 2nd job anyway.
Optional: SP Reset once your 2nd-job damage skill is maxed. The cash shop sells an SP Reset scroll. Once Fire Arrow / Cold Beam / Thunder Bolt / Heal is doing the heavy lifting, Magic Claw + Energy Bolt's 21 SP becomes dead weight. Reset and push 61 SP into pure utility: Magic Armor 20, Magic Guard 15, Max MP Increase 15, Improved MP Recovery 11.

How mage damage scales

Spells scale off Magic (the in-game stat-page line; the formula variable formerly written as MATK) and INT, not W.ATK. Each spell's own level is its mastery. There is no Wand Mastery skill.

The full MAX / MIN / Mastery formula for mage spells lives in Explaining the damage formula. The two shorthand takeaways for build planning: damage scales primarily off Magic (Magic ATK appears twice in the formula), and INT scales softer than Magic does.

Worked numbers by wand tier

Per-cast damage for both spells (Magic Claw = 2 hits combined), standard 4 INT / 1 LUK split with pre-10 beginner INT. Total Magic = `floor(INT/2) + wand Magic Attack`.

LvlWandINTTotal MagicMagic Claw / castEnergy Bolt / cast
20Metal Wand8583278-294254-270
25Ice Wand105100338-358302-321
30Mithril Wand124117402-428351-374

Stability is ~94% at full mastery the moment Magic Claw hits 20, with no Weapon Mastery wait like warriors and bowmen. At lv 30 Magic Claw out-damages Energy Bolt by ~14% per cast and gives two crit rolls. All classes have a 5% innate critical hit rate.

Stat valuation (confirmed against the sibling damage formula guide):
Magic is the dominant gear stat. +1 Magic ≈ +1.6 damage at lv 30.
INT is nearly as valuable (≈88% of a Magic point) because every 2 INT auto-grants +1 Magic, plus INT adds directly in the inner slot.
LUK does nothing, full stop. Mages cannot miss in Classic World (Closed Online Test confirmed every spell lands regardless of INT/LUK/level gap), so LUK doesn't even help with accuracy.
+W.ATK / AttackPower buffs do nothing for spells. Only Meditation (+25 Magic at max, F/P or I/L party buff) helps.

Drop your build into the DMG Simulator for 2nd-job spells with elemental multipliers and Meditation.

Weapons: wands or staves, and when to upgrade

Wands beat staves at every tier. Both are 1-handed (shield slot either way), both scale off Magic the same way, but wands have higher Magic Attack, faster base speed (Normal 6 vs Slow 7), and lower LUK requirements. Staves only win a small +1 to +2 Crit Damage. No Magic Booster exists to close the speed gap.

Wooden / Hardwood / Metal Wand are common-class (no Mage lock); Ice and Mithril are Mage-locked. Mithril Wand is the only lv 30 mage weapon; the next mage weapon, the Wizard Wand, unlocks at lv 35.

No lv 30 staff exists. Wizard Staff (lv 25) has to hold until Arc Staff at lv 45, a 20-level gap. Staves also demand more LUK at every tier, so for a lukless mage the call is even easier: wand.

Armor: meet the requirements, scroll the rest

Mage armor rules:
• Most tiers ship in INT and LUK colour variants (same stats). Skip HP/MP/acc variants.
• Mages get a native Overall progression from lv 15 (Plain Robe → Doros → Wizard Robe).
• Shield slot is free (both wands and staves are 1-handed).

Hats

INT/LUK colour variants at some mage tiers, plus a few common-class hats (Bandana, Pride lines) that can beat the mage-locked option.

Overalls (available from lv 15)

Mages and warriors are the two 1st-job classes with a native Overall progression starting at lv 15; the mage line runs Plain Robe → Doros → Wizard Robe. Bowmen and thieves don't get a dedicated overall in this level range. Sauna Robe at lv 30 is a no-req 10-slot fallback any class can wear.

Sauna Robe is the reward from the Returned Secret Book quest (final step of Mr. Wetbottom's chain in Sleepywood). Blue and red are identical (+1 to every base stat).

Wizard Robe wins the scroll math. Only Overall INT scrolls exist in Classic World; there are no separate Top/Bottom INT scrolls. Wizard Robe's 10 slots can stack up to +16 INT, while Fairy Top + Skirt's 14 combined slots can't be scrolled for INT at all.

Shoes

Two no-req gems stand out: Squishy Shoes (lv 28, any class, +1 all base stats) and Blue Snowshoes (lv 30, Mage, +1 INT).

Scrolling: cheap and safe until level 50

Scroll rules to remember:
• Most mage armor has 7 slots. Overalls have 10.
Only Chaos scrolls destroy your item on fail. Lesser, Intermediate, and Greater are all safe.
• Don't grind for perfect lv 10-30 gear. You'll likely replace everything by Lv 35+.

Where to buy them. Two Classic-only vendors stock the key Lesser scrolls for magicians:
Tulcus (Warning Street: The Swamp of Despair II) sells Overall Armor INT Scroll: Lesser at 15,000 mesos. Also stocks Hat Accuracy, Hat MP, Cape Magic Def., Cape Accuracy, and Shield DEF scrolls.
El Moth (Victoria Road: The Tree That Grew III) sells Wand Magic Attack Scroll: Lesser and Staff Magic Attack Scroll: Lesser at 20,000 mesos each.

Where to grind from 10 to 30

For per-bracket map picks (Lv 10-15 through Lv 25-30), open the Best Grind Maps guide and filter to the lv 10-30 brackets. Mages out-grind melee in this range because Magic Claw is ranged (no touch damage), Magic Guard absorbs 80% of HP damage into MP, and the MP pool is huge.

Want picks tailored to your exact build? Open the Character Builder, enter your level, stats, and gear, and the Training Advisor panel ranks every map by EXP efficiency specifically for you instead of the generic bands above.

Level 30: pick your second job

Return to Grendel the Really Old for a short quest, then choose:

  • F/P WizardFire Arrow burst (with 3s DoT) + Poison Breath (4-target explosion with 8s poison DoT at 75% chance), plus MP Eater and Meditation. Reactive, weakness-aware solo play.
  • I/L WizardCold Beam freeze + Thunder Bolt AoE, plus MP Eater and Meditation. Strongest clear curve for grinding parties thanks to Thunder Bolt's hitbox.
  • ClericHeal (doubles as damage to up to 6 undead), Bless (party acc/avoid/HP-from-items; no WDEF/MDEF in Classic World), Holy Arrow (3-hit, extra dmg vs undead), Invincible (-30% physical dmg at max). Single-target damage per minute at the lv 50 baseline is about 111,550, third behind Bandit Savage Blow (about 148,007) and Assassin Drain (about 132,168).
