MapleStory Classic Thief Leveling Guide

Summary

A level 10-30 Thief route covering Assassin and Bandit commitment, LUK and DEX allocation, Lucky Seven or Double Stab SP orders, claws, daggers, and armor.

Article body

Thief in MapleStory Classic comes down to one choice at lv 10: the advancement SP locks you into Assassin (Lucky Seven) or Bandit (Double Stab). After that: 4 LUK / 1 DEX per level, max your attack first. That's the build. The rest is detail: SP orders, gear tables, and the Lucky Seven math that makes LUK worth about 2.6x DEX.

The Thief at a glance

Advance at lv 10 via Dark Lord in Kerning City. Both branches are LUK-primary, but the lv 10 advancement SP commits you to either Lucky Seven (Assassin) or Double Stab (Bandit), so pick early.

Two 2nd-job branches at lv 30 (both LUK-primary):
Assassin → claw + stars, Lucky Seven main. Standard physical formula with WeaponMult locked to 2.6 and mastery locked to 0.5: LUK dominates, DEX and AP contribute, leveling Claw Mastery does not tighten L7's spread.
Bandit → dagger melee, Savage Blow main (standard formula; DEX still counts). Shield slot, stealth pulls, burst.

AP allocation: pure LUK or low-DEX?

Lucky Seven breaks the normal damage rules. Damage data posted by Slash on the community Discord (first tested 2026-04-20, weapon multiplier corrected 2026-05-09) pinned down hidden rules built into the skill that change how your stats pay off:

LUK is about 2.6x more valuable than DEX for your MAX hit with L7. This is why LUK-heavy (and dexless) Assassins hit so much harder.
Rage (+35 AP), Claw Mastery's +20 AP passive, and any +AP scrolls all boost L7. Older guides claimed AP didn't matter for L7; that's wrong. AP-boosting scrolls are worth chasing.
Leveling Claw Mastery does NOT make L7 more consistent (its MIN-hit floor is locked by the skill), but Claw Mastery's +20 AP passive still helps L7 and every other attack. Max it as planned.
L7's weapon multiplier is locked at 2.6 on both your MIN and MAX hit, a step above the claw's normal 2.5. Stacked on the LUK weighting, that's why LUK pays off so hard for Assassins.

Bandits (Double Stab / Savage Blow) use the normal damage rules: DEX, weapon attack, and the weapon multiplier all pull weight. Bandits should not go dexless.
  • DEX threshold: Assassins 30, Bandits 25. Once you hit your threshold, stop adding DEX and pump everything into LUK.
  • By lv 30 the character builder's auto-AP lands you at LUK 132 / DEX 30, capping DEX at the 30 weapon threshold and pouring the rest into LUK.
  • Lv 30 claws (Steel Guards line) need DEX 30 / LUK 65, cleared comfortably.
  • Lv 30 daggers (Reef Claw) need DEX 25 / LUK 60, also cleared comfortably.

Dexless (Assassins only)

5 LUK per level, DEX from gear. Fine lv 10-14 (Garnier, Triangular Zamadar have no DEX req). From lv 15 the Steel Titans claw demands DEX 15, so real-dexless means +DEX variants (Mithril Titans +1, Gold Titans +2) plus scrolled DEX armor. By lv 30 every claw needs DEX 20-30, so you're just low-DEX-with-gear.

One caveat: stat-ACC = `floor(DEX/3) + floor(LUK/6) + 5`. Every 3 DEX = +1 ACC, every 6 LUK = +1 ACC. Dexless is fine on damage but may miss late-20s mobs.

For Bandits, dexless is worse: their skills use the standard formula where DEX pulls real weight. The exotic out is STR-req daggers (Stinger lv 22, Iron Dagger lv 25, Cass lv 30), which let you go pure-STR / pure-LUK, but that's a niche commitment.

AP Reset potions are cash-shop in Classic World. If you're new, start with 4 LUK / 1 DEX and reset later if you want to try dexless.

Skill build: the SP math

Lv 10-30 gives 61 SP; maxing everything costs 110, so you have to skip something. Per-level effects live on the Thief class page.

The lv 10 decision: Lucky Seven or Double Stab. The advancement SP goes straight into one of them, so you're committed to Assassin or Bandit from level 10.
Lucky Seven (Assassin) → 120% × 2 hits = 240% per cast, ranged, LUK-only formula. Stays your main attack at 2nd job.
Double Stab (Bandit) → 160% × 2 hits = 320% per cast, melee, standard formula. Higher per-cast damage while leveling, but replaced by Savage Blow at 30 (SP Reset callout below).

Assassin build (Lucky Seven)

Assassin locks in 53 SP:
Lucky Seven 20 (main attack)
Keen Eyes 15 (+150 throwing range)
Nimble Body 15 (+15 avoid, Keen Eyes prereq)
Disorder 3 (Dark Sight prereq)

Remaining 8 SP flex, usually into Dark Sight for positioning.

Double Stab 20 (main attack until Savage Blow replaces it at 30)
Dark Sight 20 (stealth, the Bandit identity)
Nimble Body 15 (+15 avoid)
Disorder 3 (Dark Sight prereq)

Bandit SP Reset trick. The cash shop sells an SP Reset scroll. Once Savage Blow (450% per cast) is maxed, the 20 SP in Double Stab is dead weight. Reset and push 61 SP into utility: Dark Sight 20, Nimble Body 15, Disorder 20 (the ATK/WDEF debuff earns its keep in 2nd-job boss/party play), and 6 SP wherever.

Assassins don't benefit from the reset; Lucky Seven stays your main attack at 2nd job.

Weapons: claws or daggers, and when to upgrade

Claws use a 2.5x weapon multiplier; daggers use 2.0x on stab (what Double Stab and Savage Blow read). At identical WATK, a Bandit's per-hit damage is ~20% below an Assassin's from the multiplier alone.

Meba is a 25-29 weapon you'll outgrow quickly. It's the only speed-3 claw in the game, which matters before Claw Booster exists. At 2nd job, Claw Booster reduces speed by 2, down to a floor of speed 0. That takes Meba to speed 1 (Fastest) and Steel Guards to speed 2 (Faster), so Meba keeps a one-stage speed edge even with Booster. Steel Guards still comes out ahead, but on its 37 WATK (vs 29) rather than on speed. Don't perfect-scroll a Meba.

Claw variants (except Meba) ship in +0/+1/+2 DEX colours. Stack with DEX armor variants to stay 1-2 base DEX behind your gear.

Throwing stars (Assassin ammo)

Stars go in the dedicated star slot, consumed per throw, recharged at any NPC shop. All stars are lv 10 with no DEX/LUK req, so any Assassin can equip any of them. Their WATK stacks onto your claw's WATK and multiplies through L7's whole damage expression: higher WATK is always better.

Star WATK stacks 1:1 with your claw's WATK, and L7 multiplies total WeaponAttack by the whole inner damage expression, so every +WATK on your star is a pure damage line. Subi (+15) to Tobi (+23) on a 20 WATK claw is ~23% more damage per cast (35 vs 43 total WATK). A bare Steel Guards (37 WATK) to Steel Guards + Hwabi (66 WATK) is ~78% more.

Daggers (Bandit path)

Warrior/Thief daggers (Field Dagger, Coconut Knife, Iron Dagger, Cass) are speed 3 (Faster); Thief-only daggers are speed 4. Dagger Booster at 2nd job cuts speed by 2, down to a floor of speed 0, taking Thief-only daggers to speed 2 and Warrior/Thief daggers to speed 1, so the one-stage gap holds even with Booster. Iron Dagger, Cass, and Stinger use STR instead of DEX, so a STR-Bandit can run 100% dexless on weapons.

Armor: meet the requirements, scroll the rest

Thief armor rules:
• Most tiers ship in STR / DEX / LUK colour variants (same WDEF). Assassins grab LUK, low-DEX grabs DEX, STR-Bandits grab STR.
• Only Bandits get a shield (claws are 2-handed).
• No native Overall until the Avenger line at lv 35 (females only); the lv 30 Sauna Robe fills the gap.

Hats

STR / DEX / LUK colour variants at each tier, plus common-class hats (Bandana, Metal Gear, Baseball Cap, Starry Bandana, Bamboo Hat) that fill the lv 25 Tiberian's missing STR variant.

Overalls (Sauna Robe)

Thieves get exactly one Overall option in this range: the Sauna Robe. The Avenger line doesn't unlock until lv 35.

Both Sauna Robes are lv 30, no class/stat req, 10 slots, from the Returned Secret Book quest (final step of Mr. Wetbottom's chain in Sleepywood). 10 Lesser Overall LUK scrolls = +10 LUK from one piece, huge for a class starved of Overall options.

Possible Avenger gender restriction, unconfirmed. Pre-BB had several female-only thief overalls. If Classic World' Avenger is gender-locked, male thieves get no native Overall at all and the Sauna Robe becomes permanent. Run Mr. Wetbottom regardless.

Shoes

Thief shoes give Avoidability on top of WDEF. Most tiers have DEX variants + one STR variant and no LUK variant. The only LUK shoes in this range are the two no-req gems below.

Two no-stat-req gems: Squishy Shoes (lv 28, any class, +1 all stats) and Black Snowshoes (lv 30, Thief, +1 LUK, +3 avoid, 14 WDEF). Either beats the regular Chain Boots for dexless builds short on stat investment.

Gloves

Start at lv 15. STR/DEX/LUK colour variants at each tier, and every tier has a Crit Rate bonus (+1 Crit on Duo/Mischief/Wolfskin, +2 on lv 30 Sylvia). Real damage for a class built around L7 and Critical Throw, so upgrade gloves on schedule and don't hold a lower tier for its stat line. Lv 20 Mischief has no clean LUK variant; pure-LUK holds the lv 15 Black Duo until lv 25 Dark Wolfskin.

Shields (Bandit-only perk)

Daggers are 1-handed, so Bandits get a shield slot. Assassins don't (claws are 2-handed). Thief-only options are the Wristguard line at lv 22, plus a couple of generic shields:

Skip Seclusion Wristguard (DEX 34 / LUK 12, backwards for any LUK build). Jurgen (DEX 12, LUK 34, +1 DEX) is the strict winner; Nimble is the fallback.
Scroll the Wristguard for accuracy. A miss is zero damage, and a 2-hit Double Stab / 6-hit Savage Blow is a huge DPS hole on whiff. Bandits structurally have one more accuracy scroll slot than Assassins (who never get a shield at all). WDEF scrolls are fine defensively but accuracy usually wins the damage-per-slot math.

Scrolling: cheap and safe until level 50

Scroll rules:
• Most thief armor has 7 slots.
• Only Chaos scrolls destroy on fail. Lesser, Intermediate, Greater are all safe.
• Don't perfect-scroll lv 10-30 gear; you'll want to replace most things by Lv 35.

Intermediate60%+2 statNo
Greater10%+3 statNo
Chaos10%+5 statYes (on fail)

Hammer Lesser (100%) LUK into your overall piece; try Intermediate (60%) Attack on weapon slots 1-2.

Where to buy them. Two Classic-only vendors stock the key Lesser scrolls for thieves:
Tulcus (Warning Street: The Swamp of Despair II) sells Overall Armor LUK Scroll: Lesser at 15,000 mesos (for the Sauna Robe). Also stocks Topwear/Bottomwear DEF, Shoes Avoidability, Cape WDEF/MDEF/Accuracy, and Shield DEF scrolls (useful for Bandit Wristguards and the Old Raggedy Cape).
El Moth (Victoria Road: The Tree That Grew III) sells Claw Attack Scroll: Lesser and Dagger Attack Scroll: Lesser at 20,000 mesos each.

Where to grind from 10 to 30

For per-bracket map picks (Lv 10-15 through Lv 25-30), open the Best Grind Maps guide and filter to the lv 10-30 brackets. Claws shine on flat platform maps (pelt mobs from distance); daggers want choke points (Ant Tunnel yes, open Henesys no).

Want picks tailored to your exact build? Open the Character Builder, enter your level, stats, and gear, and the Training Advisor panel ranks every map by EXP efficiency specifically for you instead of the generic bands above.

Level 30: pick your second job

Return to Dark Lord in Kerning City for a short quest, then choose:

  • Assassin → ranged claw. Claw Mastery (25% star-retrieve plus +20 AP, both of which apply to L7; note that leveling Claw Mastery does not tighten L7's spread since its mastery factor is locked at 0.5), Critical Throw (+15% crit / +35% crit dmg at max), Drain (15% lifesteal), Haste. Safer, more consistent.
  • Bandit → melee dagger burst. Savage Blow (6 × 75% = 450% per cast), Steal (+35 AP on success), Dagger Mastery (+20% crit), Haste. Glass cannon, highest single-target output of any 2nd job per the tier list.

The numbers on this page come from the game's own data plus the community damage tests credited above. Spot one that's off? Post it in forum suggestions and we'll fix the page.
